This system has been used in other river surfing events, and it has been more well-received than assigning somebody (like me???) the thankless task being a judge judge. To me, surfing is really an art, with individual expressions and styles (I say this as a professional artist and Art teacher). Assessing the artistry is subjective. So, the prize-winner can be chosen by the peers, the fellow contestants, who are all there surfing together. The main objective of the event is the chance to PRACTICE ALOHA. We'll all surf together and share our aloha spirit, and not get too serious about money/ego/status. And for those who get elected to receive some bucks, that's just the icing on the cake. I've been recently carving some new miniature surfboards out of jade, and wish I could surf one of them on the Kelly's wave, but,sorry, Dave, Jade does not float. Well, I'll break out my regular airbrushed surfboard, and enjoy the wave with us surfin' bro's. Nalu nui Kelly's no ka oi...Cowibunga! Maybe it is, sort of.
