Hey David, thanks for the positive response to the article. Big Sur is probably my favorite place on the planet, pretty awesome you were able to live there for a time. I will definitely give your section a look on Riverbreak. There are definitely some waves in Idaho and Montana that I hope to surf some day. Counting the days until our wave in Denver starts pumping again.

Good job Jeff on your assessment of what it is like to transition from Ocean to River as a surfer. Yes, I had the same experience, and can share what you have expressed. I have been an ocean surfer starting back in 1957 at the original "Killer Dana" surfing with those pioneers like Phil Edwards, Mickey Munoz, Hobie Alter and so on. My surfing career took me through Santa Barbara, then the Cali Central Coast (Big Sur) since somewhere back around 1975, when I left active duty in the Navy. I was the Art/Science teacher for Pacific Valley School on the remote South Coast of Big Sur until I retired with my wife, Jana, this last year, to our property in Idaho. My surfing transition came when Kelly's Whitewater Park in Cascade was built. A wave there, originally designed for kayakers sure looked surfable to me. So, I gave it a try, and learned, alone, "from scratch" figuring out the differences between it and an ocean wave. The first experience was really "mind-bending" as I saw myself standing still and all that water coming at me. Looking dead ahead, I was moving, looking up or at the surrounding landscape, I was still. I soon learned to focus on my position on the water. The rest was history. You can read further about my experiences in the "River Surfers" section in this website (Riverbreak.com). So, enjoy your life as a river surfer, and know that we share a common and special; experience as former ocean surfers.
