I just got a new board. I’ve been waiting for the flow to come up so I can surf it for the first time on my home wave. It had been raining all night. It’s like my body knew that the flu is going to be good because I work woke up at 5 AM. I checked the flow and it was 287. By the time I got ready to go it was all the way up to 350!

The last time I choose to storm like this was a year ago. It was a snowstorm early season. It was a really good session till my last ride. On the backside cut back my real cut the water funky. As I fell my board bounced up and hit me in the chin so hard that I needed stitches. When I got to the side of the river, I actually spit out pieces my tooth. I also had to go to Dennis and get a cap.

My phone was blowing up with river surfers wondering if I was going to go surf today.

My phone was blowing up with river surfers wondering if I was going to go surf today. I knew I had to get out pretty soon to beat the crowd. I got to the river with just a couple people there and had a really good session with my buddy Jason.

Storm river surfing

The water was disgusting. I surfed really conservatively to make sure I didn’t get too much water on my face. Because this is the first rain storm of the season it’s flushing all the nasty stuff into the water and I didn’t want to take any chances.

Tips on Surfing Dirty Water

A few tips for anyone looking to surf rain runoff or really dirty water … Wear a nose plug, ear plugs and keep your mouth closed when you swim. This will help minimize how much nasty water you get in your body. If you have a drysuit wear it! A dry suit will keep the water off and out of your body. Limit your exposure to the crap that is in the water as much as possible!

It was an awesome first session of the season my new board was amazing! It was really cold but the surf warms my soul. Best part of all is I ended the session injury free! Thanks for watching and stay tuned for next weeks vlog!

This is probably the first time in the history of river surfing a foil board had been used on a river wave. In ocean surfing foilboards are nothing new, but using them in river surfing is a fresh take. This weekend Kai Lenny and Red Bull were out on the Lochsa River slashing Pipeline for an experimental groundbreaking foil river surfing session. Here is what Kai Lenny has to say about it:

“What a blast it was doing hydrofoil river surfing! Interestingly, it feels as though you’re going so fast but when you look to both side of the river everything is stationary. Never felt that much speed in my life without actually moving forward! Can’t wait to do more of it.”

Video footage will be released soon so stay tuned – Huge props to Nate Meyer for capturing this unique moment. Make sure to check out his profile!

The growing popularity of the river wave on Hawea River in New Zealand has shown its dark side today when a river surfer got trapped under water on one side of a bridge pylon. He literally escaped death by inches.

The young surfer owes his life to Ben Yates, an experienced whitewater kayaker and rescue volunteer. He was alerted by a distressed woman to the river surfer who was trapped under water on one side of a bridge pylon. His board was still attached to his leg and trapped on the other site of the pylon. This is clearly a nightmare for all river surfers. He wasn’t able to release his board and got dragged under by the force of the river.

The river surfer has escaped from death by inches.

Pro kayaker Ben Yates tried to detach the leash while another kayaker tried to lift the river surfer’s head above the water. While struggling to safe the river surfer’s life, Ben got entangled in the leash and trapped underwater, luckily only for a short time. According to two other river surfers who where at the spot, the river surfer has escaped from death by inches.

Only 10 minutes prior the incident the water level was significantly higher due to Contact Energy releasing water from the Hawea Dam. If the river surfer became entangled only 10 minutes earlier, he would not have been able to get any breaths. We do not want to picture what could have happened.

The current incident reminds us of what Elijah Mack and the World River Surfing Association (WRSA) have been praying for years “the future of surfing is near, it’s nowhere near the ocean, and we don’t ever wear leashes, you always wear a helmet, you always wear a life vest.”
