The french city Metz should soon be transformed into a world class river surf spot.

Hydrostadium teamed up with the City of Metz and FFCK (French Federation of Canoe Kayak and Paddle Sports) to build a prototype of a river wave at the La Pucelle dam. The wave was put in the river in only a few days, back in December 2019. The 5 meter wide prototype demonstrates the technical feasibility to build a fully fledged river wave at this location. Metz has enormous potential: The aim is to build a wave 10 meter wide and up to 1.3 m high, transforming city into one of the best river surf spots in European river.

Help spread the stoke for this project and transform Metz into a world class river surf spot by sharing their petition:

There are several waves in an irrigation canal spreading through on a couple of miles, but most spots are impossible to get out from. However, at the spot there is a nice little wave that you can surf without any problem. The wave itself is narrow so no room for anything fancy but good to just drop in and ride to get the hang of it. When you fall, no fear of hitting the bedding, and 20 meters further you can just get out of the current and walk out. Although technically there is no regulation about surfing there, we have met the locals living there (one farmer) and even the agents from the wateragency and they all find it just cool that people surf there.

Spot Details

Country: France
Nearest town/city: Saint-Martin-de-Crau, France
River: Canal du craponne
Address: 13310 Saint-Martin-de-Crau, South of France
Directions: Drive from Salon-de-Provence to Saint-Martin-de-Crau, via the D113, a national road parallel to the A54 highway (and avoid the toll :-) ). After a couple of miles you will see on you right a truck stop called “Cabane Bambou”, 100 meters from there on the right just turn in the first street. Continue that street, driving along the canal for about 2 km and you will see the bridge in the sharp right turn. Plenty of parking space right next to the wave.
Latitude: 43.6567993
Longitude: 4.8857074

Wave Details

Characteristics

Narrow, during summer times always surfable due to constant flow. Good spot for beginners.

Tips

As the canal is narrow (about 4 meters) and it is made of concrete, cheap foamies are the preferred board choice. Below the wave itself, it is just a smooth metal slate so nothing to hit but after a couple of meters it are round stones. Just drift 10 meters and swim to the side, you can then stand up and just walk out. Easy to get in when you’re regular (wave is best on left side) but as goofy you want to drop in.

A very nice flow but no flap yet so not a proper standing wave yet, but with a long rope attached to the bridge it is perfect for playing around with a surfboard or bodyboard.

Spot Details

Country: France
Nearest town/city: Salon-de-Provence, France
River: Canal du congrès
Address: Chemin du Regirau, 13430 Eyguières, France
Directions: Between Salon de Provence and Eyguières, take the turn to go to camping Nostradamus and drive passed it. 500 meters further on the left you can cross the little bridge (yes, it does hold a car) and you can park on the bank near the spot.
Latitude: 43.6694641
Longitude: 5.0473566

Wave Details

Characteristics

The wave it always surfable as it is an irrigation canal and the water level is consistent all year long. the river has a drop of about 1.4 meter. The water runs over a iron slate so perfectly flat and straight. The wave itself is due to breaking on the stones at the end of the slate but we will still install a flat to have the perfect wave.

Dangers

You can get in the water on the right side of the wave. The slate is flat but the water is pretty shallow. The underground is just big (20 cm) rocks. Very easy getting in and out.
