The young surfer owes his life to Ben Yates, an experienced whitewater kayaker and rescue volunteer. He was alerted by a distressed woman to the river surfer who was trapped under water on one side of a bridge pylon. His board was still attached to his leg and trapped on the other site of the pylon. This is clearly a nightmare for all river surfers. He wasn’t able to release his board and got dragged under by the force of the river.

The river surfer has escaped from death by inches.

Pro kayaker Ben Yates tried to detach the leash while another kayaker tried to lift the river surfer’s head above the water. While struggling to safe the river surfer’s life, Ben got entangled in the leash and trapped underwater, luckily only for a short time. According to two other river surfers who where at the spot, the river surfer has escaped from death by inches.

Only 10 minutes prior the incident the water level was significantly higher due to Contact Energy releasing water from the Hawea Dam. If the river surfer became entangled only 10 minutes earlier, he would not have been able to get any breaths. We do not want to picture what could have happened.

The current incident reminds us of what Elijah Mack and the World River Surfing Association (WRSA) have been praying for years “the future of surfing is near, it’s nowhere near the ocean, and we don’t ever wear leashes, you always wear a helmet, you always wear a life vest.”

This year the European Championship in Stationary Wave Riding will be held from 10 to 11 August. As in the previous years, the event will take place at Munich Airport on an artificial wave — this year even bigger: 10m wide, up to 1.5m high, strong and glassy. Local heroes and international top riders will partake in the competition, showing off their talent to convince the jury. In the finals, the best surfers will take to the waves for a chance to win € 10,000 in prize money. The European Championship is the highlight of the Surf & Style 2013, running 31 July to 25 August 2013.

Riversurfing in Poland is still in its infancy. As we wanted to find spots for river surfing, my friends from the Polish surfmag and I hit on the idea of offering a wetsuit giveaway to the person who would discover the best surfable river wave in the country.

Having reviewed the entries, we picked the biggest waves and headed out there. Finally, the winner was a spot located at the Bobr river — a huge wave with flows of 100 cubic meters per second. It took us a couple of hours to work it out, but once we did, it was wicked. The wave is spectacular and technically challenging — sadly, it’s only surfable a few days each year, when the Bobr river is in full spate.

Since the spots have been published at surfmag, many said they’d been checking out different waves, but most of them were only smaller breaks. I know there are four or five good river surf spots in Poland, with one in the Warsaw area — we can’t wait to hit those waves!

The premiere of an unprecedented all-day sports and punk rock event will be held on July 5^th 2013 at the Whitewater Park in Čunovo, Slovakia. Starting at 10am, there’ll be river surfing courses on the artificial wave led by Maroš Nemec, and other Slovak and international river surfers are going to pull out some of their best tricks.

Further attractions include wakeboarding, wakesurfing, SUP and white water rafting, with the possibility to rent a jet ski, SUP and Demon river surfboards. Throughout the day, DJs will spin the hottest beats before the live music side of the event starts at 7pm, featuring Lucifers, From Our Hands, Ramones Bratislava and the legendary Slovak punk band Zone A. Best of all: admission to the event is free!
