The long-awaited high water season is on. Though the Radetzky wave in Graz is still damaged from a strong flood last summer (2012), the current high water (>470cm) has led to a better wave than locals had expected. It’s not the Radetzky that we used to know, but it’s surfable!

Murbreak Riversurf Contest 2012

Every year riversurfers from Austria join the “Murbreak Riversurf Contest” at the Radetzky bridge on the river Mur (pronounced “Moore”) in Graz. After an unsuccessful year 2011 with no contest due to low water levels the sixth Murbreak Riversurf Contest was held on 24th of June 2012 with a perfect water level of 410cm.

In spite of the late announcement (water level forecast is only possible for a few days) there were 28 surfers. Very good weather condition, too. There were a lot of arials, three-sixties, one-eighties, ollies and other tricks. Finally Flo Wagner beat last contest’s winner Stefan Schafgassner. Third and fourth place went to Wolfgang Taucher and Michael Reitmann. Two girls also took part in the contest. Chrissi Rieger reached place 9 and Lisa “Dr. Lisa” Veith place 16.

The Radetzky Wave seated underneath the Radetzky bridge in Graz, Austria, is probably the best river surf spot on the river Mur. It is also the oldest spot in Austria — surfed by Austrian river surfing pioneers like Peter Bartl, Reini Urban and others since 1999.

Conditions

Surfable water levels 445-540cm.

Characteristics

Beginners should try the Hauptbrücke first.

Dangers

Rope entry difficult at low (fin damage) and high (body injury) water levels.
Rocks close to the surface right behind the wave near the river banks.

Tips

Ask locals for help (murbreak – a surfing federation in Graz).
Bring tea and spirits.
