River Surfing Board Transfer

When I got to the river I found a tube. It was just laying on the side of the river. Someone left it there and I took it upon myself to try and surf it.

I tried to jump in from the side and drop in from above. The wave wasn’t strong enough to hold the tube.

The transfer is the easy part

Then I wanted to try and do a board transfer onto the river wave. The transfer is the easy part. Getting onto the wave with two boards was really hard. A board transfer doesn’t count if you don’t paddle onto the wave with the boards yourself.

Finally after a few tries I got onto the wave and made it happen!

I ended my surf session on an inflatable surfboard. It surfs so well from rail to rail for an inflatable. I never have to worry about dinging it up or anything! One of the best investments in my quiver!

River Surfing Beaver Wave

Surfing a wave so close to a major city reminds me about how important it is to keep our waterways clean. The river bed at this wave is lined with trash. This trash came from all over the place and was carried into the river by wind and rain runoff. When the water level comes up it will be carried farther downstream. Eventually it will end up wherever the river ends … in the ocean!

Beaver Wave is right on the edge of downtown. It is the epitome of urban surfing. The sound of cars humming by on the highway is a soundtrack for your surf session. The water is warm and nasty. I only wear neoprene to protect myself from the shallow rocks and the trash floating around in the eddylines.

You would think a species who depends on clean water for survival would be a little bit more interested in preserving our waterways. It is clear to me from the riverbed that if it is out of sight, it is out of mind. Not only do we depend on the waterways for clean drinking water but farmers downriver use this same water for crops that we eat. Personally I wouldn’t want my food watered with this sludge. I barely want to surf in it!

We need to have a positive impact on the environment to preserve the earth for future generations to enjoy. I want my kids to be able to enjoy surfing clean water no matter where they chose to catch waves (river or ocean). Just remember to try and leave a zero carbon footprint at your surf spots. Pack in what you pack out! If you have time pick up some trash at whatever location you surf. Leave your local surf spot cleaner than when you arrived.

River Surfing Florence Wave, Colorado

The uncertainty of what to expect and the experience of surfing something new. This exhilaration is what river surfing is all about. Wondering if you will score an epic session. Or will you be left frothing with the thought of what could have been if you would have hit it at a different flow. Only knowing what I have been told about this wave I packed up my surf gear in my van.

Everyone had been surfing this wave from 400-700 cfs. We rolled up and the water looked way higher. I checked the gauge and it was pumping at 1k – the wave looked awesome! So we all got ready as quick as we could. We jumped in the water and got our first rides.

Florence Wave in Colorado

By the time we took a break a few more surfers showed up. I couldn’t believe we had already been surfing for 3 hours. I surfed until I had noodle arms and legs. The scenery at the wave was pretty cool.

I couldn’t believe there was a wave in the desert. There were cows all over the place. Surfing new waves is awesome and experiences like this make me want to surf as many places as I can! Thank you Florence! I will be back to shred soon!
