Tew Shanez

Iowa’s First Whitewater Park is ~1200 feet long with three distinct features, and is entertaining at flows of 600-14,000 cfs. The river levels are rain dependent (not dam/release), and are generally best in spring/early summer. If fall rains prevail, flows can be good into fall and early winter. Late July, August, and Sept are typically the lowest flowing months. Two main features for surfing: Dam Drop (DD Wave) and Tew Shanez.

Wave Details

Characteristics

0-600: Too shallow for much surfing.

600-1800: Can be fun for surfing if it’s green. Inflatables and short fins below 1500cfs.

1800-3500: Best range. Can get nice and glassy. Walk right up and hop or bomb drop in.

3500-5500: A foamy wave-ish hole.

5500-8000: Still a wave-ish hole but catch on the fly (eddy access disappears).

8000-10,000: A beginner wave forms far river-right, but access is challenging as you have to paddle/pull yourself up through willows in the water.

~11,000+: It tends to flatten out.

Wave Details

Characteristics

0-400: Low. Use inflatable with short fins. A little tricky staying in the wave at this level for novice surfers. Not much carving at these levels.

400-700: Low but easier to catch, mild carving. Stick with inflatables.

700-1500: The wave is about 2.5-3ft tall, 25ft wide and pure glass! This is the best for riversurfing/sup surfing. Hardboards work around 1000cfs. Get’s nice and glassy. Great level to learn at.

1500-3500: On the higher end of this range riversurfing/sup surfing is great on DD Wave in the pocket

3500-5500: High. Secondary wave of DD can be accessed river left, but is a bit tricky.

5500+: Extremely high, Above 5500 eddy access is mostly gone for all features. Some drop in play possible and some secondary waves are eddy accessible but change moment to moment.

Metz Wave

The french city Metz should soon be transformed into a world class river surf spot.

Hydrostadium teamed up with the City of Metz and FFCK (French Federation of Canoe Kayak and Paddle Sports) to build a prototype of a river wave at the La Pucelle dam. The wave was put in the river in only a few days, back in December 2019. The 5 meter wide prototype demonstrates the technical feasibility to build a fully fledged river wave at this location. Metz has enormous potential: The aim is to build a wave 10 meter wide and up to 1.3 m high, transforming city into one of the best river surf spots in European river.

The Top 3 Barrelling River Waves

Barrelling river waves are the holy grail of river surfing. Here are the three biggest river tubes your must surf in your lifetime.

1. Rapid #11

This is perhaps the most powerful and scary tubing river wave on the planet (see featured shot above by Alan van Gysen). Only a few people, including Elijah Mack, have surfed this gnarly wave in the Zambezi River in Africa. This wave only works for about two weeks when the water level in Zambezi is dropping. In the video below, 14 x Skimboarding World Champion Bill Bryan is getting pitted in Rapid #11. Check out Scott Lindgren’s profile for some insane stills and videos of this spot. This wave is so insane, that we decided to share a second video of Rapid #11 with you, this time with Andrew Matthews taking full advantage of the tube.

2. Norway

3. Lochsa Pipeline

The infamous Pipeline Wave at the Lochsa River in Idaho has been surfed since a long time now and people from Idaho and Montana flock there during high flow times. The dynamic wave does not turn into a full tube, but it has a big face and you can get barrelled!

The future of barreling river waves

Chances are that there will be more barrelling river waves in the near future. Wave technology is evolving rapidly and we’re getting closer and closer to make artificial tubes in rivers a reality. Little Horses

Little Horses is a decent size flood level river wave. The best time to hit the wave is at high flows in spring, fall and winter. There are 1-2 surfable sections on the wave, allowing 2-3 people to river surf simultaneously.

Directions: Near Lyon, go to PARC de Miribel-Jonage (exit 4 on the A42-E611). In the roundabout take the exit to Centers Equestres (the first exit when you come from Lyon). Drive one kilometer to a second roundabout and take the second exit. You can park at your right hand side. The wave is just 100 meters down, but you need to walk.

Wave Details

Characteristics

The wave can by surfed at high water levels on the Rhône River. Check the level with the “River App” at Perrache Station (minimum flow: 800m3/s).

Dangers

Be aware of large trees after extreme rainfall. Powerful stream.

Tips

To exit the wave, flow down with the stream, there is a little beach on the left, approximately 100 after the wave.
