Shape your own ding-resistant river surfboard with this innovative board building kit by Greenlight Surf Supply. The guys from Greenlight have assembled this building kit specifically designed for the needs of river surfers, based on a durable Engineered EPS blank and a special new Innegra woven fibreglass. Here’s how to get that specific shape of your dreams you were always looking for!

So, Greenlight Surf Supply is in the surfboard shaping business, what exactly are you guys doing?

Greenlight was founded in 2005 with the vision of comprehensively teaching and continuing to support surfers who want to shape their own surfboards at home. Through our unmatched talents of engineering, manufacturing, education, and communication in the surfboard world, we provide top quality materials, tools, methods and support to make surfboard building easy, fun, and affordable.

Being a DIY-focused company, we also design and build all of our machinery and processes to manufacture the products. DIY is in our DNA and we want to share the pride of the surfboard building process and the absolute stoke you feel when riding a board you designed and built for yourself and style.

This river surfboard building kit will get you on the wave in no time

What led you to found Greenlight Surf Supply? Tell us a bit about your story …

I couldn’t find what I wanted to ride on the racks at the surf shops so I started building my own boards in my garage. Materials were limited then so I glued up some insulation panels and glassed it with boat resin. Then I started developing EPS (expanded polystyrene) blanks and tools to make shaping foam easier. 13 years later and still having fun developing new products to make surfboards better.

Why should someone get a board building kit in the first place instead of ordering a standard surfboard?

Other than the cost of a building kit is less than ½ of buying a board off the racks, the #1 reason our customers make their own surfboards is the feeling of pride and accomplishment provided by shaping my own boards. There’s nothing like the feeling of riding something you created.

Your dream shape is in your own hands now

What exactly is included in your surfboard kits? What else (tools, materials) is required to get started?

We offer an array of surfboard, SUP, wake, and riversurf kits. There are “Starter Kits” that include all the materials, tools, instruction, and friendly Greenlight support as well as basic material kits if you have the tools and knowledge already. We also make custom surfboard blanks per customer’s specifications and can package them in to a custom kit.

Shaping a surfboard is almost considered an art of its own. How much know-how and experience is required to shape a board? Can anyone do this? What kind of skills are needed?

To have an idea of what you want to do on a wave, shape the board based on that idea, and then experiencing that feeling you crave when surfing the board … no words can describe it. It’s the highest level of surfing. It’s EPIC! ~ Dave Grimes

No one expects you to do it all on your own. That’s why Greenlight Surf Supply continues to build and support an extensive educational online library of video and step-by-step instruction to comprehensively teach surfers of any age or ability how to design and build their own surfboards. Our education-based approach takes the mystery out of shaping and surfboards by providing an unprecedented level of instructional resources available to you online 24/7. The Greenlight brand is widely recognized in the surfboard building community as the most innovative, professional, and trustworthy source for materials, instruction, and service on the web.

How much time does it take to shape a board based on your building kits?

You can shape a board in less than 4 hours and the fiberglassing process takes 4 days overall with the resin curing times. So you can build a new board in a week if you work on it about an hour a day.

How much flexibility do your kits provide? Some people may want to go creative, doing crazy tail shapes, asym shapes, different rockers, channels, bottom contours etc.

One of the benefits of our Engineered EPS blanks is that they allow any shape up to 24” wide to be carved out of the foam. Rocker adjustments, channels, and concaves are easily shaped in and we can also cut close tolerance custom blanks to any shape a customer wants. The blanks can be painted with acrylic paints before glassing or resin tints and pigments can be added while fiberglassing to give your board color and style. We include custom ink jet logo paper to print your own logos and special paint pens to draw detailed graphics on your board too. Infinite possibilities in design!

Infinite possibilities in terms of shapes and board art

Surfboard shaping can easily turn into a challenge … what could go wrong?

Building my own board with this kit was fantastic! So much fun and the board turned out pretty good for my first one. I liked how light the EPS foam is and it shaped nicely. Thanks to Greenlight for all your help and the great supplies! ~ Mark K.

Bottom line – everything is fixable while building a board. The best board builders know how to hide the mistakes! Things will go wrong on your first board but understand those issues will come out later in the process and not affect the ride. The biggest mistake we’ve seen is a bad outline cut which makes the board look like it’s your first one. We have a library of outline templates to choose and download online and if you cut the outside your template line and sand down to the line with our special RailRunner tool, your board starts out right and sets you up for success.

Do you offer a kit that is specifically tailored for river surfing? If so, what is included in this kit and which board types are covered?

Yes, we offer a river surfboard building kit with different size blank options to build and board style you want up to 6’0”. Resin, fiberglass, fin boxes, and custom logo paper are included in the kit. And while supplies last, we are including a new Innegra woven fiberglass cloth that greatly increases the ding resistance of a river surfboard.

Many river surfers prefer durable and resistant boards that can take a beating in a rocky river. How resistant are your boards and what options do river surfers have to make the boards more resistant (e.g. reinforce rails with kevlar, carbon etc.)?

The way our Engineered EPS foam blanks are made they can take a hit from a rock or another board and absorb some of the energy and bounce back rather than crumbling like conventional polyurethane foam blanks. The Epoxy resins we supply also have some elasticity to flex before breaking and letting water in. We also offer a new fiberglass cloth with Innegra fibers as well as a variety of fiberglass cloths and carbon fiber reinforcement to make the board as strong as you’d like.

Futures or FCS boxes, it’s up to you

What fin set ups are possible and do you support both FCS and Futures?

We carry both FCS and Futures brand finboxes and you can put as many fin boxes in a board as you want. Our River surfboard kits come with 3 fin boxes of your choice for a tri fin set.

In which sizes are your blanks/kits available?

Our stock blanks range from 4’11” Skimboard blanks to 12’ SUPS. We quickly manufacture each blank per order order for maximum customization in length, thickness, rocker, foil, and stringer setup. We can make any blank you want if it’s not in our catalog.

Are there any guides, (video) tutorials or manuals that come with the kit? How do you deal with people who need more specific advice or have questions?

Beginner shaping kits come with a video download shot in my garage over 10 years ago. No flashy editing or hi resolution, but tons of great information and tricks are shown for first time shapers in a home environment similar to what they’ll be shaping in. We are very proud of our online Surfboard Building Guide which is a comprehensive step-by-step tutorial for board building. In addition we have a Surfboard Design guide on the website that tackles all the physics and hydrodynamics of a surfboard so you can learn how a board works and design it to suit your style of surfing and the waves you ride.

Our online HELP CENTER currently has over 400 answers to customer questions over the years and is a tremendous resource for any board builder to gain more knowledge of the process. Lastly, as always, we’re eager to help anyone through email and get back with answers amazingly fast.

Board based on a Greenlight Building Kit

Where do you ship your kits?

We ship kits and blanks throughout the USA and Canada. We cannot ship resins overseas due to airline regulations but we ship fiberglass, fins, tools, etc. to international customers daily.

The BootieLeash stops the wetsuit leg from moving and creeping up the wetsuit bootie heel and calf during the frequent flexing, bending, kicking and twisting of the wetsuit knee. It also prevents water from rushing down the bootie calf.

How It Works

The BootieLeash connects from your wetsuit leg to the wetsuit bootie-heel noose keeping your wetsuit leg locked down and in place. It is comprised of two components:

a polyamide snap hook vertical eye and

a self-fastening Velcro strap.

The BootieLeash assembly can remain attached or disconnected to the bootie-heel noose after each use and also prevents water from being blown up the wetsuit leg. The device should only be used to connect the wetsuit leg to the wetsuit bootie heel noose. It should never be used for any other applications.

The History of BootieLeash

Michael Mednick, inventor of the BootieLeash, started to experiment with solutions to prevent his wetsuit leg from creeping up in the late 60s. Michael initially used duct tape while wearing wool socks under his booties, but due to frozen hands after surfing in ice cold waters of Virginia Beach, and the inability to remove the duct tape from the wetsuit leg this solution wasn’t really satisfying. In the 70s, Michael started to use various types of strings to hold the wetsuit leg down around the bootie calf. The strings, however, had to be tied so tightly that leg circulation was often nearly cut off.

In the 70s, Michael started to use various types of strings to hold the wetsuit leg down around the bootie calf.

In the 2000s, he cut the ankle-wrap portion of a surfing leash off, and tried this technique to secure the wetsuit leg to the bootie calf. Later, in 2012 Michael applied Velcro® straps, but the wetsuit leg creep was still occurring because there was no lock-down mechanism attached to wetsuit bootie from the wetsuit leg.

Then, in 2015, the first prototype BootieLeash was invented using random parts taken off a small folding beach cooler and parts purchased from a local sporting goods stores. This conceptual design, that when tested, performed marvellously and locked the wetsuit leg down and in place stopping the upward movement and creep of the wetsuit leg up the bootie ankle and calf. An innovative and inexpensive wetsuit leg to wetsuit bootie was now in the final conceptual stages that prevented wetsuit leg creep, and movement of the wetsuit leg to the top of the wetsuit bootie heel and calf.

A Munich based Action Sport Venture tells us about their vision about a holistic surfing experience. Learn what Sandro Stark, CEO of HIDRO has to say about surfing, passion and what makes a truly holistic surfing experience.

HIDRO gives river surfers full control over their fin setup.

As a team of four tech and surfing passionistas, we are currently working on a way to provide individualisation to the world of surfing. During our intense collaboration and co-creation with surfers and shapers we recognised one thing: Surfing is broken!

Shapers and small manufacturers around the world are building beautiful individually designed surfboards every day. But when it comes to selecting the right fins we face a high-complex and cheaply mass produced portfolio of fins dominated by two large monopolists.

We thought, that we are missing a piece to realise our full potential and to radically reduce complexity when surfers select their board setup. Right now we connect with pro surfers, shapers and board manufacturers to deliver a blueprint for a truly holistic surfing experience.

How Will This happen?

Right now, we believe that the shapers will be the best evangelists and change-makers for our technology. We’re planning to build an app or software that translates the boards style & measurements but also the weight and improvement areas of the surfer into a set of exactly tailored fins. We are also experimenting with a wide variety of materials. At the moment we are playing around with high-tech 3D-printing materials, combining glass and nylon to reach extraordinary stiffness or using slightly flexible materials with shape-memory.

Our technology will be available to every shaper and manufacturer around the world.

We are working together with Strongwater and created custom branded river surf fins for their boards. Quite recently big wave rider David Langer approached us – since then we have been tapping into new ultra-durable materials like titanium to provide the right fin for Dave and other big wave hunters.

In the near future we are going to develop a solution to make this technology available to every shaper and manufacturer across the world. We benefit from our large industry network that enables us to have fins manufactured locally. This helps everyone to reduce shipping costs and reduce the footprints we leave on our planet.

Right now we already ship the first 3D manufactured river surf middle fin that is based on sustainable resources such as castor oil.

Gerwin is shaping surfboards — in the heart of the Alps, deep in the Austrian jungle. It may come to your surprise, but the most durable and innovative surfboards are being shaped in the least expected places. Here’s what Gerwin, co-founder of “delight alliance” has to say about his approach to river surfboard shaping.

We’re pretty curious about the name “delight alliance” and how it all began. What exactly is delight alliance and where does the name come from?

Delight alliance is a small surfboard shaping company based in Salzburg, Austria. We focus on river surfboards and boards for surfers who would like to improve their ocean surfing skills. The name “delight alliance” comes from the delight you feel while surfing and the alliance of surfers with whom we share our passion.

Love the idea behind the name! When was delight alliance founded and how did you come up with the idea of shaping surfboards?

The first boards were built in 2007 in a small workshop in Kuchl, Austria, close to a popular river surfing spot on the river Salzach. The regular ocean boards were good, but not 100% suitable for rivers, this is where the idea of developing and building a specific board for this wave came to us. This was the beginning of the “vonda” shape, this shape is still available and it is the allrounder shape suitable for almost every wave out there. A few years later the HD-rails and FixPlugs were invented to make our boards more durable against stones and concrete.

So it sounds like your shaping was driven by the specific needs of river surfers. What is your shaping philosophy at delight alliance?

We are shaping surfboards suitable for river surfers and land locked surfers. When we develop or improve a shape, we always think about every aspect of the surfboard, the hydrodynamics, impact forces, static lift, dynamic lift, water speed and much more. Getting all of these elements into one board isn’t always easy.

So, you guys use machine shaping, right? What are the advantages compared to hand shaping?

In order to develop boards we have to be able to build the same board over and over again. The shaping machine we are using is pre-shaping our blanks which allows us to be as precise as possible. In my opinion that’s the only way to develop boards seriously. There are of course a hand full of shapers who would be able to do the same by hand, but like I said just a hand full. So in order to develop the best river surf boards you need a shaping machine and anybody that has built a board knows that although the blank is pre-shaped it is still a lot of work, and there is always a special connection with every board built.

Do you think that river surfers need specific boards that differ from ocean surfboards? What makes a good river surfboard?

Yes, I do! If you take skiing for example, you wouldn’t be happy with a powder ski whilst doing a slalom race, different types of skis offer a better performance for certain types of terrain or style … the same is true for surfboards.

River surfboards tend to be shorter and with less volume, this means that there is less static lift which isn’t needed so much as it is in the ocean. River surfers benefit more from the dynamic lift, this is created by the water speed as well as some other aspects such as surface area, angle and tail shape etc.

Delight alliance is by many regarded as an innovative board producer. What is so unique about the boards you build?

What makes a big difference is that river surfers are surrounded by stones and concrete, regular boards don’t like that. That’s exactly why we invented the HD-rails (“hau drauf” rails), a rail reinforcement with kevlar, the same material also used in bulletproof vests. It increases the durability compared to a regular board by three times. Some of the waves work with a spoiler (e.g. sheet-flow waves), on waves like this you can easily destroy your fin boxes. So this is why we are using a technique called FixPlugs to distribute the force on a bigger surface — the fin boxes don’t break that easily.

This durability approach sounds pretty useful for river surfing. What are the most popular models of delight alliance?

The Vonda & Fluky Bastard. The Vonda is the allrounder shape and can be used for almost every wave out there. The Fluky Bastard is the shape created for powerful surfing on faster waves like Eisbach, Citywave or Alm.

Which riders are part of the delight alliance team?

Our HD technology makes our boards three times more durable than standard surfboards.

We are working together with some of Europe’s best river surfers. Kathy Gappmayr, two time European champion has been riding delight alliance boards since her very beginning and we are very happy to have such an all-round talent like her in our team! Young gun Lukas Haigermoser is one of Austrian’s best river surfers and we are really excited by his talent and think he will close the gap on the really strong Eisbach-surfers this year! He is very engaged in board developing, there are always crazy ideas in his head!

Steve Ratzisberger just joined our team, his radical surfing style is great to watch. We are excited to work with him and get all his input. We are also supporting some grom riders which is really exciting to see the up and coming talent for the future.

You are based in Austria, right? Do you also sell the boards internationally? Where can river surfers buy delight alliance boards?

We are located in Salzburg, Austria, in the middle of the Alps, pretty uncommon for a surfboard shaper. We are selling our boards all over Europe. In the future we would like to sell to North America as well, but we need to do some paperwork first. Delight alliance boards can be ordered online delight-alliance.com, you can call or visit us in our workshop.

Are you also partnering with specific brands (fins, gear) or shops?

We try to support the local brands, there are so many creative people who sell amazing products around us. driftwood fins, brick beanies, NU.ART surfstuff and of course Riverbreak. We share our experience with the local communities that are planning to build waves. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL WAVE!

What advice would you give to people looking for the right river surfboard?

The river surfboard best for you does not only depend on your style, we also look at the type of wave you regularly ride on. But the most important thing is that you feel comfortable on your board.

How often do you hit the river waves yourself?

As often as I can! I get really grumpy if I haven’t managed to get on my board for a couple of days.

What does the future hold for delight alliance surfboards?

Tricky question! If we knew, life would be a lot easier! But we will do everything with the same passion for surfing like we have been doing for the past 8 years. Then I believe we will have a lot of fun doing what we are doing. Of course, we will try to get more waves, so that everyone gets as much surf time as he or she wants.

Anything else you want to pass on to our readers?

Stay hungry!
