Surfing Petitcodiac River in Moncton, New Brunswick

A world away from Southern California, the two surfers Colin Whitbread and JJ Wessels came to surf a river wave in the land of Endless Winter, Canada. Their goal: riding the tidal bore on the Petitcodiac River in Moncton, New Brunswick.

At high tide Bay of Fundy spills back into the mouth of the river against the current. As a result a huge wave shoots back up the river for miles. The locals think of the water of toxic, nobody swims there — seeing surfers in this rivers is pretty new to Moncton.

The two Californian surfers set a new North American Record for the longest wave ever surfed: they rode the tidal bore over 20 miles in a session of 2 1/2 hours. Also Xavier Goguen, a surfer from Moncton and some local dudes saw this as a perfect opportunity to join the two Californian surfers. The tidal wave attracted riders from far away. A surfer girl came all the way from Norway to surf this river wave. She was the first woman ever riding that chocolate bore.

Welcome Moncton — it’s awesome to see another tidal wave added to the world of river surfing.

The boys from the german-based FUS CREW — Jonas Bronnert, Gerry Schlegel, Simon Strangfeld and Yoyo Terhorst — surfing Bono (Seven Ghosts), the infamous tidal wave in Sumatra (check out SURFERS 94 for the full story about this trip).

Bono / Seven Ghosts

The tidal bore “Bono” (or “Seven Ghosts”, named after a surf movie about the bore), is a famous surf spot in Sumatra, Indonesia. The wave in the Kampar River can rise up to 10 feet and travel up to 50 kilometers — in theory you can ride this beast more than one hour.

Directions

There is one flight per day from Kuala Lumpur to Pekanbaru (PKU) in Central Sumatra and then the Bus to Teluk Meranti (7hr drive). Alternatively fly to Singapore and take the ferry to Sekupang on Bantam Island (45min), then the speedboat from Sekupang to Tanjung Batu on Kundur Island (2hrs) then the daily speedboat from Tanjung Batu to Teluk Meranti (3-4 hrs).
