Hello everyone!

First of all: everything went well. All surfers had a great deal of fun and the event was held in an excellent atmosphere. About 28 surfers (10 of which were female) registered on Friday. The wave was open for training all day on Friday, and competitors took the chance to get to know the local conditions. In the evening we held a little surfers dinner, so the competitors could socialise and get to know each other. After dinner we visited the historic center of Bratislava, giving everyone even more chance to chat.

The finals were held in a competitive atmosphere

On Saturday we had an early start, since the plan was to get the whole contest over and done with in one day. It started out with the women’s up until the semi-final, after that the men had their first rides. With only short breaks we moved on until it was time for the finals. One last longer break so finalists could catch their breath, and on we went to the last round. Only the best riders had a chance to ride in the final runs, which were very well received by spectators.

The finals were held in a pretty competitive atmosphere. Afterwards, we wrapped up the day with the price-giving ceremony, the movie premiere of Slow Dance (a surf movie), and the after-show party, where we had a couple of drinks and already started planing out next year’s event.

Definition: River surfing is the sport of surfing either standing waves or tidal bores in rivers.

River surfing is the sport of surfing either standing waves or tidal bores in rivers. It’s related to ocean surfing but surfboards are usually thicker and wider, similar to fish surfboards. In contrast to ocean waves, the force of the river’s current is used to keep afloat and ride the wave.

Standing waves

In this type of river surfing, the wave is stationary on the river, caused by a high volume of water constricted by flowing over a rock and creating a wave behind. A river surfer can face up-stream and catch this wave and have the feeling of traveling fast over water while not actually moving.

Tidal waves

Tidal bores occur in areas with a large tidal range (typically more than 6 metres (20 ft) between high and low water), and where incoming tides are funnelled into a shallow, narrowing river via a broad bay.

Everyone knows high water surfs are the best, but just recently river surfers came under fire from authorities and media for allegedly contributing to the suffering of flood victims by taking advantage of the floods that caused their predicament for their own enjoyment. But now river surfers from Munich came up with an idea to combine high cfs fun with a good cause. They organized the first international high water charity day, and called out to other communites to follow their lead.

River surfers from Graz led the charge by hosting their Charity Surf at the well-populated Hauptbrücke Spot in Graz on saturday. Today, events at Almkanal in Salzuburg and at Eisbach and Floßlände are in progress. The donations will be handed over to charity organisations, to help relieve flood victims.
