A couple of years ago, Graz lost its beloved wave in the river Mur due to the construction of a hydropower plant. The river surf community was promised a replacement and the government published plans for a new wave. Today, there is still no wave and the new government does not seem to be eager to build it anymore.

The surf community in Graz is done waiting and wants to set a sign, showing that there is substantial interest in a new wave. This is a call to all river surfers out there – no matter where you’re based: Share your support for the great sport of river surfing and sign the petition. Every signature counts!

Thanks so much for your support!

Flusswelle Steyr is a group of dedicated river surfers making their dream of a river wave in the city of Steyr come true. Let’s hear what they have been working on and what they are up to:

Our goal is to build one (or more) river waves in the city of Steyr. In the first feasibility study, our engineer looked at 12 potential spots in the city, of which 8 are located in the city center. In the past decades, the city of Steyr used the water of the river Steyr for industrial purpose (Steyrs’ economic history started with the production of rifles by the force of water). This led to the construction of dams and floodgates creating the drops that we need for a river wave to function. These dams and floodgates actually create plenty of possibilities for river waves in our area.

Kruglwehr in Steyr

After the first study was completed, we looked at the pros and cons of each spot and identified the most promising locations. Unfortunately, the most attractive spots in the city center turned out to be not ideal for a river wave (canalisation, too expensive, too dangerous to surf). We also wanted to create a new spot and didn’t want to rebuild an existing one.

The team behind Flusswelle Steyr

Right now our favourite is the “Kruglwehr”, located in the “Unterhimmler Au” (the meadow and recreation area of Steyr). At this spot, we can use almost the whole water of the river, there is a substantial drop, the spot is considered safe, there is existing infrastructure (a buffet, toilets, parking area), space for construction machines and an existing building in the river (a slide for boats).

The potential spot at the Kruglwehr

It is also a nature reserve area, reaching up into the city. Currently, our engineer is in touch with the responsible persons. Fortunately, the local politicians and the mayor are supportive about our wave project. So far, we spent 5,000 € (with the financial support of the “Regionalforum”) for the first study. With the support of “FAZAT” (a club for the development of Steyr), we were able to organise sufficient funding for a second study, which will focus on the potential spot at the “Kruglwehr”.

We hope that this is just the first wave project in Steyr – there is enormous potential in our city for more than one river wave!

In a recent article published in the journal “Zukunft Forschung” (Science Future), Prof. Aufleger from the University of Innsbruck explains the engineering measures required for a river wave to function. This article is an interesting and easy-to-read piece for every river surfer who wants to learn more on how stationary waves actually form.

The balance of headwater and tailwater is what matters in river wave construction.

By giving a basic introduction into river hydraulics, Prof. Aufleger emphasises the importance of the fine balance between headwater and tailwater. If this balance has not been calculated precisely, the formation of a river wave is likely to fail. Here, fine-tuning is absolute key to create surfable river waves. To account for the naturally varying levels of headwater and tailwater, Prof. Aufleger teamed up with the company “Dreamwave” and proposed an adjustable river wave system. Recently, Prof. Aufleger has been involved in a number of feasibility studies and assumes that the implementation of the “Dreamwave” concept in a larger project is only a matter of time.

Learn more on the basics of river wave construction and read the full article here.

Despite the gnarly weather the stoke-factor was at an all time high at the first ever river surfing contest in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria. The Crown of the Traun was a huge success with over 30 river surfers from Austria and Germany who battled it out on the river Traun.

The line-up saw some of the most talented river surfers fighting for the title for more than 4 hours, sometimes accompanied by heavy rainfall. After all, Lukas Haigermoser came out first in the men’s and Christina Minimayr in the women’s final. The contest was held on 23 May 2015 and organised by the local river surf association Rivermates (Salzkammergut) and supported by the Austrian Water Rescue Federation (ÖWR).
