Surf and Style 2014

The Surf & Style event at Munich Airport enters its fourth round — from July 30 to August 24 everyone is welcome to surf on the world’s biggest artificial stationary wave at an airport. The 4th European Championships in Stationary Wave Riding will also go down right at the airport wave from August 9-10.

The Airport Munich is turning into worldwide surf scene’s hotspot again this summer. From July 30th to August 24th, the world’s biggest artificial stationary wave offers perfect surfing conditions. No matter if beginner or professional – everyone is invited to get on a board and ride the waves. The beloved Kids Camps in the mornings return for the youngest. The European Stationary Wave Riding Championships, which is held on August 9th and 10th, are the considered highlights of this year’s Surf & Style event. Here, the international river surfing elite competes for the desired cup.

The temporary wave riding system is located in the Airport’s MAC-Forum between terminal 1 and 2, and opens daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for both surfers and spectators. The pool of the size of 200 m² holds 1,000 m³ water; around the pool, deck chairs in a chill out area invite to linger. Tropical drinks and the fitting sound of radio partner Charivari 95.5 establish additional summer flair.

Michael Otremba, marketing and media director of the Airport Munich GmbH: “Positive resonance for our wave in the MAC-Forum has not faded away, not even after three years – quite the opposite. The questions of when Surf & Style takes place this year have increased in the run-up. Thus, we are very excited to bring back four weeks of Hawaii feeling to the Airport Munich and – after the recent tennis event and the successful public screening – to be able to offer our guests another sporty highlight at the MAC-Forum.”

Kids Camps

The beloved Kids Camps are returning as well. Children between the age eight and 16 interested in surfing can now register at www.munich-airport.de/surfandstyle. The camps take place daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m and last three days each. For the first time, there will be three different levels – depending on the little surfer’s know-how. Participation in the Kids Camps costs 15 Euros. This includes the starting fee, local supervision as well as the catering of fruits and beverages.

Free Surfing for Everyone

In the afternoons, the wave is available for all interested surfers until 8 p.m. during free surfing. Slots take 45 minutes and hold ten persons each. The mandatory equipment – wet suit, helmet, and surfboard – can be rented on site for free. All slots are furthermore accompanied by professional surf coaches. Free surfing requires registration two days in advance as well.

European Championships in Stationary Wave Riding

The Surf & Style highlight will be the European Stationary Wave Riding Championship. During the event, local heroes from Eisbach Munich compete with the international elite of river surfers. Last year, we’ve seen athletes such as Kalani Robb or Shane Beschen participating int the event. Likewise this year, the promotors are doing everything they can to attract  the world’s best surfers. Cup holders Tao Schirrmacher and Kathrin Gappmayer are already confirmed, registration for the championship is due August 1st, 2014. Both wave riding and tickets for spectators are free – also during the championship. Additionally, car park P20 will be free of charge for five hours.

More information on Surf & Style can be found on Facebook and at the airport’s Surf & Style website.
