Sick Estuary River Surf Spot

There are a couple of riversurf spots located at estuaries (see worldwide riversurf map). These waves form at spots where fast river currents flow into the ocean. The sheer force of the river stream generates internal waves at the spot where freshwater from the river and saltwater from the ocean collide.

This wave is located at The Russian River Mouth, located at the north end of Jenner beach, about 2 hrs north of SF. The wave does not work anymore. For years they city would use a backhoe to break open the lagoon and the water would rush out and create waves that could reach 10ft on the face. Now the city has set up a eco-friendly way to let the water reach the ocean, this new techniques lets the water trickle out of the lagoon at the south end of the beach. Bummer.

Thanks for the update on the wave Eli! Usually I’d support eco-friendly measures, but in this case… hmmmmm…. ;-) Kidding… Too bad the wave is gone, however, there are a couple of similar estuary waves in other places… Australia for example … if I’m not mistaken!
