Iowa’s First Whitewater Park is ~1200 feet long with three distinct features, and is entertaining at flows of 600-14,000 cfs. The river levels are rain dependent (not dam/release), and are generally best in spring/early summer. If fall rains prevail, flows can be good into fall and early winter. Late July, August, and Sept are typically the lowest flowing months. Two main features for surfing: Dam Drop (DD Wave) and Tew Shanez.

Spot Details

Country: USA, North America
Nearest town/city: Charles City, Iowa
River: Cedar River
Address: 106 Chapel Ln, Charles City, IA 50616
Directions: Park at Riverside Park next to the library.
Latitude: 43.064925
Longitude: -92.677792

Wave Details

Characteristics

0-400: Low. Use inflatable with short fins. A little tricky staying in the wave at this level for novice surfers. Not much carving at these levels.

400-700: Low but easier to catch, mild carving. Stick with inflatables.

700-1500: The wave is about 2.5-3ft tall, 25ft wide and pure glass! This is the best for riversurfing/sup surfing. Hardboards work around 1000cfs. Get’s nice and glassy. Great level to learn at.

1500-3500: On the higher end of this range riversurfing/sup surfing is great on DD Wave in the pocket

3500-5500: High. Secondary wave of DD can be accessed river left, but is a bit tricky.

5500+: Extremely high, Above 5500 eddy access is mostly gone for all features. Some drop in play possible and some secondary waves are eddy accessible but change moment to moment.

There are several waves in an irrigation canal spreading through on a couple of miles, but most spots are impossible to get out from. However, at the spot there is a nice little wave that you can surf without any problem. The wave itself is narrow so no room for anything fancy but good to just drop in and ride to get the hang of it. When you fall, no fear of hitting the bedding, and 20 meters further you can just get out of the current and walk out. Although technically there is no regulation about surfing there, we have met the locals living there (one farmer) and even the agents from the wateragency and they all find it just cool that people surf there.

Spot Details

Country: France
Nearest town/city: Saint-Martin-de-Crau, France
River: Canal du craponne
Address: 13310 Saint-Martin-de-Crau, South of France
Directions: Drive from Salon-de-Provence to Saint-Martin-de-Crau, via the D113, a national road parallel to the A54 highway (and avoid the toll :-) ). After a couple of miles you will see on you right a truck stop called “Cabane Bambou”, 100 meters from there on the right just turn in the first street. Continue that street, driving along the canal for about 2 km and you will see the bridge in the sharp right turn. Plenty of parking space right next to the wave.
Latitude: 43.6567993
Longitude: 4.8857074

Wave Details

Characteristics

Narrow, during summer times always surfable due to constant flow. Good spot for beginners.

Tips

As the canal is narrow (about 4 meters) and it is made of concrete, cheap foamies are the preferred board choice. Below the wave itself, it is just a smooth metal slate so nothing to hit but after a couple of meters it are round stones. Just drift 10 meters and swim to the side, you can then stand up and just walk out. Easy to get in when you’re regular (wave is best on left side) but as goofy you want to drop in.

Eyguières Wave is located on the Canal du Congrès, offering a nice big drop on a perfect iron plate. A very nice flow but no flap yet so not a proper standing wave yet, but with a long rope attached to the bridge it is perfect for playing around with a surfboard or bodyboard.

Spot Details

Country: France
Nearest town/city: Salon-de-Provence, France
River: Canal du congrès
Address: Chemin du Regirau, 13430 Eyguières, France
Directions: Between Salon de Provence and Eyguières, take the turn to go to camping Nostradamus and drive passed it. 500 meters further on the left you can cross the little bridge (yes, it does hold a car) and you can park on the bank near the spot.
Latitude: 43.6694641
Longitude: 5.0473566

Wave Details

Characteristics

The wave it always surfable as it is an irrigation canal and the water level is consistent all year long. the river has a drop of about 1.4 meter. The water runs over a iron slate so perfectly flat and straight. The wave itself is due to breaking on the stones at the end of the slate but we will still install a flat to have the perfect wave.

Dangers

You can get in the water on the right side of the wave. The slate is flat but the water is pretty shallow. The underground is just big (20 cm) rocks. Very easy getting in and out.

Surfing a wave so close to a major city reminds me about how important it is to keep our waterways clean. The river bed at this wave is lined with trash. This trash came from all over the place and was carried into the river by wind and rain runoff. When the water level comes up it will be carried farther downstream. Eventually it will end up wherever the river ends … in the ocean!

Beaver Wave is right on the edge of downtown. It is the epitome of urban surfing. The sound of cars humming by on the highway is a soundtrack for your surf session. The water is warm and nasty. I only wear neoprene to protect myself from the shallow rocks and the trash floating around in the eddylines.

Beaver Wave is the epitome of urban surfing

You would think a species who depends on clean water for survival would be a little bit more interested in preserving our waterways. It is clear to me from the riverbed that if it is out of sight, it is out of mind. Not only do we depend on the waterways for clean drinking water but farmers downriver use this same water for crops that we eat. Personally I wouldn’t want my food watered with this sludge. I barely want to surf in it!

We need to have a positive impact on the environment to preserve the earth for future generations to enjoy. I want my kids to be able to enjoy surfing clean water no matter where they chose to catch waves (river or ocean). Just remember to try and leave a zero carbon footprint at your surf spots. Pack in what you pack out! If you have time pick up some trash at whatever location you surf. Leave your local surf spot cleaner than when you arrived.

Surf and take care of the earth.

The water in Colorado has been at an all time low. Every single winter I curse the snow and cant wait for spring. Spring brings the melting water and Surf. The lack of water has me missing the heavy snow. But I have been charging and taking advantage of the waves that are in and trying to surf as much as possible while the water lasts. Both surf spots are on the Arkansas river.

Florence has been a go to spot for most the front range locals in Colorado. The drive is really simple and the wave is easy to find. The wave can be surfed as low as 400 CFS. The prime flow for shortboarding is 1,000-1,200 CFS. It is in the Desert so the weather is typically pretty warm. The water temp is cool but feels perfect with the warm air temps.

Staircase wave is Buena Vista is an iconic wave in the SUP surfing world. This wave is pretty soft on a shortboard so it is going to require a board with some volume even at the higher flows. I had a lot of luck on it with my inflatable surfboard. Prime surfing flow on this wave is anything above 1,400 CFS. The altitude is 9,000 FT above sea level so be prepared to suck wind in between every ride.

One thing that I am lucky to have for the lower flows is my inflatable surfboard. The thing surfs rail to rail amazing and has a ton of volume so it can pretty much surf anything! Look for my next vlog I will be surfing my inflatable surfboard in Golden Colorado!

Colorado has a plethora of great river waves with easy access. River surfing is a subculture of surfing that has grown tremendously over the recent years. Because of the accessibility of river waves all over the state, Colorado has become a mecca of the river surfing world.

Glenwood Wave

Glenwood Wave is one of the most iconic river waves in the sport. Show any river surfer anywhere a picture of the wave and they can tell you where it is. Just in case you are new to the sport this wave is located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The wave is river wide and surfers left is a long board style wave and surfers right is more of a short board style wave. Ideal flow for this wave is 15,000-24,000 CFS. You can even check this wave out live on http://www.coloradowebcam.net.

Glenwood Wave, Colorado

Scout Wave

Scout Wave is easily some of the best surfing in the state. This wave is located in Salida, Colorado. If you follow the Badfish team you have seen this wave. This wave is great for SUPs and short boards! If you are looking for a wave to learn and practice new tricks this is one of the best spots. The ideal flow for this wave is X.

Scout Wave, Colorado

Pueblo Wave

Pueblo, Colorado is home to one of the most unique surf parks around. Surfers Right is lined with a huge wall full of some bad ass graffiti. Hole 3 has a mural of a dragon and the grim reaper. Tell me pictures with that in the back drop don’t grab peoples attention. An ideal flow for this wave is 1,100-4,000 CFS.

Pueblo Wave, Colorado

Miracle Wave

Miracle Wave on the front range is just that, a miracle. Years could pass and this wave will not break. When it breaks it is amazing. It is a river wide wave with a pocket on each side. With a long enough board you can connect the pocket and surf the whole wave! This wave starts breaking at 1,000 CFS. The higher the flow gets, The better the wave gets.

Miracle Wave, Colorado

Benihana’s Wave

Benihana’s Wave is hands down the best wave in the state! Don’t underestimate the size of this wave is the pictures. It is much, much more than just a small tongue. This wave is helping expand the river surfing culture in Colorado. This wave is adjustable and can be dialed in depending on what the flow is. Ben Nielson designed the wave and it will be a game changer for the growth of the sport.
