Currently, more than 1,500 people have signed up to support the petition to preserve river surfing at the Floßlände in Munich. If you agree that river surfing should not be sacrificed for profit, take a minute and sign up for the petition to help preserving the beauty of river surfing at one of Munich’s most popular river surfing spots.
A 40-years old river surfing tradition under threat
River surfing in Munich has become a 40-year old tradition and belongs to the city like beer gardens and the Wiesn/Oktoberfest. Hundreds of thousands of Munich citizens and tourists enjoy watching the river surfers each year at the Eisbach in the “Englischer Garten” or at the Floßlände in Thalkirchen. Also, municipality and the mayor Christian Ude support the river surfing in the city of Munich.
Sacrifice river surfing for corporate profits?
Opposed to the mayor, the “Stadtwerke München GmbH” hold a different view: they are partially diverting the water into a power plant situated next to the Isar. By doing so, they are destroying the river surf wave at this popular spot. Diverting the water could increase the yearly revenue of the Stadtwerke by about 0,001% and may be good for profit-related bonuses for the responsible managers. However, they don’t seem to care much about the tradition of river surfing on the Floßlände wave.
The river wave at the Floßlände
The Floßlände in Munich is particularly popular amongst beginners. The wave is one of the two most popular river surf spots in Munich and is located right by the campground Thalkirchen. The spot is a little further up the river and not as dangerous as the infamous Eisbach (“ice river”) which is more popular among medium and advanced river surfers. The Floßlände is much more relaxed and people value the laid-back attitude. There is a big lawn next to it where river surfers can enjoy the sun, barbecue and chill.
